Design Engineer - Solar & Hybrid (PV + BESS)
A fast‑growing renewable energy developer is seeking a PV Design Engineer to support the development and optimisation of utility‑scale solar PV and hybrid (PV + BESS) projects across Sub‑Saharan Africa. This role offers exposure across the full project lifecycle, with a strong emphasis on energy yield modelling, concept design, and technical evaluation, ensuring projects are technically robust, efficient, and commercially viable.
Role Overview:
The PV Design Engineer will play a key role in developing concept‑level designs, performing energy simulations, and supporting technical feasibility assessments for new and ongoing projects. You will work closely with engineering, development, and external partners to ensure optimal system performance and alignment with overall project objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Energy Yield Modelling & Analysis
- Perform energy yield modelling and performance simulations for solar PV and hybrid PV‑BESS projects
- Develop and maintain energy models, including loss assumptions, degradation, and availability
- Conduct sensitivity analyses and optimise performance assumptions
Concept Design & System Optimisation
- Develop concept‑level PV plant layouts and system configurations
- Optimise DC design, inverter loading, tracker layouts, and land utilisation
- Analyse system performance factors such as clipping, shading, and module technologies
Technical Feasibility & Development Support
- Support site screening, irradiation analysis, and technical feasibility assessments
- Identify technical risks and constraints for new project opportunities
- Assist in early‑stage project development and evaluation
Hybrid Systems & BESS Integration
- Support modelling and optimisation of PV‑BESS hybrid systems
- Coordinate with specialists on storage integration and energy profile optimisation
Technical Review & Due Diligence
- Review and validate designs and reports from external consultants
- Support technical due diligence activities for project financing and acquisitions
Continuous Improvement & Reporting
- Analyse operational plant performance and integrate lessons learned into future designs
- Maintain GIS tools and screening methodologies for project evaluation
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal stakeholders
Minimum Requirements:
- Degree in Engineering or related field
- 2-5 years' experience in solar PV engineering or renewable energy development
- Experience in utility‑scale solar PV projects
- Proven experience with energy yield modelling tools (PVsyst, Helioscope, Homer, etc.)
Key Skills & Experience:
- Strong understanding of solar PV system design (DC systems, inverters, trackers, layouts)
- Experience with energy loss modelling and performance simulation
- Ability to develop and optimise concept‑level plant layouts
- Exposure to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and hybrid systems (advantageous)
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem‑solving skills
- Experience reviewing technical studies, designs, and feasibility reports
