The Senior Renewable Engineer will provide technical leadership and engineering expertise in the development and delivery of renewable energy and electrical infrastructure projects.

The position combines electrical engineering, renewable energy project development, project management, technical design, client engagement and business development. The successful candidate will be involved across the complete project lifecycle, from feasibility and conceptual development through detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operational handover.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Engineering

Provide technical leadership and oversight on renewable energy and electrical infrastructure projects.Lead feasibility studies, conceptual designs, detailed engineering and technical due diligence.Review and approve renewable energy system designs, calculations, specifications and engineering deliverables.Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, standards, regulations, grid codes and engineering best practice.Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, technologists and graduate engineers.Drive innovation and adoption of emerging renewable energy technologies.

Renewable Energy Project Development

Lead the development and execution of Solar PV, Wind, BESS and hybrid renewable energy projects.Conduct energy yield assessments, system performance modelling and technology evaluations.Evaluate technical, commercial, financial and project risks.Support projects from concept and feasibility through financial close, construction, commissioning and operation.Develop technically and commercially viable renewable energy solutions for clients.

Project Management & Delivery

Manage multiple projects within approved scope, budget, quality and schedule requirements.Develop project execution plans, schedules, budgets and resource allocations.Monitor project performance and identify and mitigate project risks.Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders.Report project status, risks and opportunities to management and clients.

Electrical Design & Grid Integration

Lead the design and integration of MV, HV and EHV electrical systems associated with renewable energy facilities.Perform grid integration, power system analysis, protection coordination and network assessments.Develop and review single-line diagrams, protection philosophies, equipment specifications and electrical layouts.Support optimal integration of renewable generation assets into utility and private electrical networks.Utilise industry-standard engineering software for electrical modelling and renewable energy assessments.

Construction, Commissioning & Operational Support

Provide engineering support throughout procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning.Conduct site inspections, FATs, SATs and commissioning activities.Resolve technical challenges during construction and commissioning.Ensure operational readiness and long-term reliability of renewable energy systems.

Commercial & Cost Management

Prepare and review capital cost estimates, operating cost assessments and financial models.Evaluate contractor and supplier proposals from technical and commercial perspectives.Support procurement activities, contract negotiations and contract administration.Identify opportunities for cost optimisation and value engineering.

Client & Stakeholder Management

Build and maintain relationships with clients, developers, utilities, financiers, OEMs and strategic partners.Facilitate technical workshops, progress meetings and stakeholder presentations.Act as a trusted technical advisor on renewable energy and energy transition projects.Ensure client expectations are understood and consistently exceeded.

Business Development & Market Growth

Identify and pursue new business opportunities within renewable energy and the broader energy transition sector.Contribute to strategic planning and market development initiatives.Lead or support proposals, expressions of interest, bids and tender submissions.Develop long-term client relationships and support revenue growth.Monitor industry trends, regulatory developments and emerging technologies to identify future opportunities.

Quality, Risk & HSE

Ensure compliance with quality management systems and project governance requirements.Implement technical quality assurance and quality control processes.Conduct project risk assessments and manage technical, commercial, environmental and safety risks.Promote a strong health, safety, environmental and sustainability culture throughout project execution.

Leadership & People Development

The role is responsible for protecting critical digital and operational assets through practical cybersecurity controls, secure network architecture, firewall and remote access management, vulnerability remediation, incident support and alignment with cybersecurity standards and operational risk priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and maintain network security across IT and OT environments.

Administer and govern firewall rules, including reviews, approvals, documentation, clean-up and lifecycle management.

Implement and maintain network segmentation and segregation between IT, OT and operational zones.

Coordinate firewall patching, upgrades and configuration changes.

Monitor network traffic and support investigations into suspicious or unauthorised activity.

Manage OT remote access and VPN environments, including supplier VPNs and client-to-site VPN access.

Monitor VPN access, usage and anomalies and support investigations into access-related incidents.

Coordinate vulnerability assessments, remediation activities, audit findings and cybersecurity risk actions.

Support cybersecurity incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions and post-incident reporting.

Support cybersecurity audits through evidence management, stakeholder coordination and remediation tracking.

Assess IT and OT environments to identify cybersecurity requirements, vulnerabilities and risk exposure.

Develop and monitor cybersecurity and risk improvement plans, including patching, upgrades, vulnerability mitigation and control improvements.

Support the implementation and operation of cybersecurity tools, platforms, standards and procedures.

Work with Network Systems, Computing Systems and SCADA Systems teams to ensure infrastructure aligns with cybersecurity requirements.

Maintain cybersecurity governance documentation, standards, procedures and operating protocols.

Manage cybersecurity-related stakeholder, supplier, contract and project activities.

Technical Environment

The role requires knowledge across IT and OT cybersecurity, including:

OT / ICS / SCADA environments

Experience & Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Automation, Mechatronics or an equivalent discipline.

5-10 years' experience in a Cybersecurity Engineer, Cybersecurity Specialist or equivalent cybersecurity role.

Experience in Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Operational Technology (OT) or critical infrastructure environments is highly advantageous.

Practical experience with network security, firewalls, VPNs and network segmentation.

Experience with vulnerability management, remediation and cybersecurity incident response.

Exposure to SCADA, industrial networks or plant connectivity is advantageous.

Experience with renewable energy, utilities, mining, manufacturing, industrial automation or other critical infrastructure environments will be advantageous.

An established renewable energy developer and asset owner is seeking an experienced Project Director to lead the owner-side management of a portfolio of utility-scale Solar PV projects, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) where applicable.

This senior role provides leadership across the full project lifecycle - from transaction support and financial close through construction, commissioning, handover, and the Defects Liability Period. The successful candidate will act as the owner's representative, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with shareholder, lender, regulatory, and contractual requirements.

Role Overview

The Project Director will oversee a portfolio of renewable energy projects while providing governance, delivery assurance, stakeholder management, and execution support across multiple workstreams.

The role combines portfolio oversight with hands-on project management and requires close collaboration with Development, Transactions, Engineering, Procurement, Legal, Finance, SHSEQ, Construction, Commissioning, and Asset Management teams.

Depending on project allocation and organisational requirements, the incumbent may directly manage projects while also providing leadership and coordination to other Project Managers across the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Transaction Support

Support development and transaction teams in identifying construction, operational, commercial, and technical risks during project development.Assist with project budgeting, scheduling, and technical assumptions used within financial models.Support lender and investor due diligence processes, including engagement with technical advisors.Assist with contractor, EPC, Owner's Engineer, consultant, and equipment supplier procurement processes.Contribute to contract negotiations and project readiness activities prior to financial close.Manage Early Works packages where required.Coordinate grid connection activities, preliminary designs, environmental approvals, and permitting processes.

Portfolio & Project Delivery

Lead owner-side governance across a portfolio of utility-scale renewable energy projects.Ensure effective management of scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, procurement, and stakeholder engagement.Coordinate and supervise Project Managers assigned to portfolio projects.Provide escalation support and strategic guidance to project teams.Assume direct Project Management responsibilities where required.

Construction & Execution

Manage multidisciplinary project teamsMonitor project performance against budgets, programmes, and contractual obligations.Conduct site visits and inspections to monitor progress, quality, safety, and compliance.Chair or attend construction progress meetings with contractors and consultants.Review and certify project milestones and contractor deliverables.Manage punch-list close-out activities through to final completion.

Risk, Compliance & Governance

Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS)IFC Performance StandardsEquator PrinciplesSouth African regulatory requirementsMonitor project risks and implement mitigation measures.Ensure permits, licences, insurances, and project agreements remain valid throughout execution.Support lender compliance and contractual reporting obligations.

Stakeholder Management

EPC ContractorsConsultantsLandownersLocal communitiesLenders and investorsShareholders and board representativesPrepare and present reports to senior management, investment committees, boards, and project stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related discipline.Professional registration or certification such as:ECSA (PrEng)SACPCMPPMPEquivalent recognised accreditation

Experience Required:

Essential

Demonstrated experience in utility-scale Solar PV project development and execution from an owner, IPP, developer, Owner's Engineer, or similar perspective.Experience managing renewable energy projects through multiple lifecycle phases.

Preferred

10+ years' experience delivering major infrastructure, engineering, or energy projects.5+ years' experience within the renewable energy sector in South Africa.Experience supporting projects through:Financial CloseConstruction ReadinessEPC DeliveryCommissioningHandover and Operations

Key Skills & Competencies

Strong portfolio and project management capability.Excellent understanding of utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects.Strong commercial awareness and ability to interpret project contracts and delivery obligations.Proven experience managing project schedules, risks, costs, quality, and governance.Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage competing priorities.Strong reporting skills and experience engaging with executive and board-level stakeholders.Sound understanding of construction, commissioning, handover, and defects liability management.
