Our client, a leading renewable energy advisory and project delivery business, is seeking a Senior Project Manager to oversee a portfolio of Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across South Africa. This is an exciting opportunity to work on high-impact energy projects while acting in the capacity of Principal Agent and Owner's Engineer.

About the Role

This position is responsible for leading the successful delivery of renewable energy projects from construction through to commissioning and handover. The successful candidate will take ownership of multiple projects, manage contractors and consultants, engage directly with clients, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The role is based in Cape Town and includes regular travel to project sites across South Africa.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Construction Oversight

  • Manage a portfolio of Solar PV and BESS projects across various stages of construction and execution.
  • Act as Principal Agent and Owner's Engineer, coordinating contractors, consultants, clients, and project stakeholders.
  • Monitor project progress, quality, programme performance, budgets, and risks.
  • Lead project meetings, prepare reports, record minutes, and manage stakeholder communication.
  • Manage project contracts, variations, claims, payment certifications, and contractual compliance.
  • Conduct site inspections and quality reviews to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry best practices.

Leadership & Operational Excellence

  • Assist in driving operational improvements and project management best practices across the business.
  • Support strategic planning, project portfolio scheduling, reporting, and resource allocation.
  • Develop lessons learned, project delivery tools, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor and support junior project managers and team members where required.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders on commercial, technical, and contractual matters.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project outcomes.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in construction and/or development project management or Principal Agent roles.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and competing priorities.
  • Strong contract administration experience, including variations, instructions, claims, and payment certification.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel nationally.

Highly Desirable

  • Engineering, technical, built environment qualification, or PMP certification.
  • EPC project experience covering design coordination, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project close-out.
  • Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage (BESS), electrical infrastructure, or embedded generation project experience.
  • Experience with JBCC contracts, Owner's Engineer, Lender's Technical Advisor, or Construction Monitoring environments.
  • Professional registration with SACPCMP, ECSA, or a similar professional body.
