Renewable Energy Engineer
Renewable Energy Engineer - 2IC to Head of Technical
Location: Johannesburg
We are seeking a Renewable Energy Engineer to act as second-in-command to the Head of Technical, providing technical input and leadership across utility-scale solar PV, wind and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
The role covers the full project lifecycle, from early-stage feasibility and design reviews through to construction oversight, commissioning and operational problem-solving.
Working alongside a hands-on Head of Technical, you will support EPC contracts and tenders, construction design reviews, grid connection processes, development strategy and plant performance investigations. This opportunity suits an engineer with strong experience in one area who wants to broaden their expertise and develop towards a Head of Technical role over time.
Key Responsibilities
Act as second-in-command to the Head of Technical, deputising on technical matters across the project portfolio.
Lead technical and economic feasibility assessments for new solar PV, wind and BESS opportunities.
Review project designs, EPC proposals and technical specifications for suitability, bankability and alignment with best practice.
Support procurement processes and the technical evaluation of EPC, O&M and equipment supply agreements.
Review and negotiate technical requirements within major project contracts.
Provide technical input into investment committee papers and lender due diligence.
Support grid connection processes and assess compliance with applicable technical requirements.
Oversee construction-phase technical monitoring, address engineering queries and support commissioning.
Work alongside operations and maintenance teams to investigate technical issues, assess plant performance and develop practical solutions.
Prepare and review technical reports to support project and operational decisions.
Mentor junior engineering and operations staff.
Assess emerging technologies, including BESS and hybrid systems, for potential application across the portfolio.
Qualifications and Experience
BSc/BEng in Electrical, Mechanical or Renewable Energy Engineering.
A minimum of three years' direct experience in utility-scale renewable energy projects is essential.
Relevant experience gained within an independent power producer, EPC contractor or engineering design consultancy.
Experience reviewing and negotiating EPC, O&M and equipment supply agreements from a technical perspective.
Strong understanding of grid connection requirements and South African regulatory and technical standards.
A Master's degree or Pr.Eng registration would be an advantage.
Skills and Attributes
Sound engineering judgement and the confidence to take ownership of technical matters.
The ability to deputise credibly for the Head of Technical.
Strong analytical, reporting and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, including engagement with lenders, EPC contractors, suppliers and internal teams.
The ability to contribute across different stages of the project lifecycle.
A commitment to continuous learning and an interest in progressing into technical leadership.
Expertise across every technology is not required. Strong experience in one area, combined with the ability and motivation to develop across others, will be valued.
