Smart4Energy is seeking an experienced, hands-on Construction Supervisor for a major industrial infrastructure project in Gauteng.

We are looking for a technically capable and safety-conscious professional with a strong background in power generation, industrial installations, mining infrastructure, mineral processing plants or heavy industrial construction.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for daily site activities, contractor coordination, workforce supervision, quality monitoring and construction progress, ensuring that all work is executed safely, efficiently and to the required standards.

This opportunity is particularly suited to supervisors who have worked on large-scale, multidisciplinary construction projects and are comfortable operating in demanding, fast-paced site environments.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Supervision & Site Execution

  • Supervise day-to-day construction activities within the project yard and on-site.

  • Coordinate civil, mechanical, electrical and associated construction activities.

  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with approved engineering drawings, specifications, method statements and project schedules.

  • Monitor site productivity, resource allocation and construction progress.

  • Identify and resolve site constraints, operational issues and potential delays.

  • Ensure effective coordination between different work fronts and construction disciplines.

Contractor & Workforce Management

  • Directly supervise approximately 10 site personnel.

  • Coordinate larger contractor and subcontractor workforces.

  • Monitor contractor performance, productivity and workmanship.

  • Manage interfaces between multiple trades, contractors and specialist service providers.

  • Conduct daily coordination meetings, toolbox talks and site briefings.

  • Ensure contractors meet agreed safety, quality and delivery requirements.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all site activities.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable South African occupational health and safety legislation and project HSE procedures.

  • Monitor risk assessments, method statements and permit-to-work requirements.

  • Oversee high-risk activities, including lifting operations, working at heights, electrical installations and confined-space work where applicable.

  • Identify unsafe conditions and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

  • Participate in site safety inspections and incident investigations.

Quality Control & Progress Monitoring

  • Ensure construction workmanship meets approved specifications and quality standards.

  • Conduct routine site inspections and identify defects or non-conformances.

  • Monitor daily construction progress against the approved programme.

  • Identify delays, resource shortages and quality concerns.

  • Maintain accurate daily site records and progress reports.

  • Support inspections, testing, punch-list closeout and project handover.

Stakeholder Coordination & Reporting

  • Report directly to the Project Manager or Construction Manager.

  • Provide accurate daily progress updates and site reports.

  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, subcontractors and client representatives.

  • Escalate construction risks, delays and technical challenges.

  • Support short-term construction planning and scheduling.

Minimum Requirements

  • 7+ years of relevant construction site experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or foreman capacity.

  • Proven experience in industrial construction environments, preferably involving power generation, mining, processing plants or large-scale mechanical and electrical installations.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise multiple contractors and subcontractors.

  • Experience managing site teams and coordinating multidisciplinary workforces.

  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, engineering specifications and method statements.

  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, quality control and site safety requirements.

  • Experience monitoring construction progress and preparing site reports.

  • Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving abilities.

Qualifications & Certifications

A relevant technical qualification is preferred:

  • National Diploma or Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline; or

  • Recognised trade qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Millwright, Fitting, Boilermaking or a related field, supported by substantial supervisory experience.

Advantageous safety certifications and training:

  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH.

  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA).

  • Permit-to-Work systems.

  • Working at Heights.

  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).

  • Incident Investigation.

  • First Aid and Fire Fighting.

Highly Advantageous Experience

  • Diesel generator and industrial power generation installations.

  • Power plants and associated electrical or mechanical infrastructure.

  • Mining and mineral processing plant construction.

  • Heavy industrial facilities and plant installations.

  • EPC and EPCM construction environments.

  • Industrial electrical, mechanical and piping installations.

  • Large-scale multidisciplinary construction projects.

  • High-risk industrial construction environments.

  • Previous project-based or fixed-term construction assignments.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a hands-on site leader, not someone who manages construction activities exclusively from an office.

You should be confident leading teams, coordinating multiple contractors, resolving operational challenges and ensuring construction work is delivered safely and to the required quality standards.

You will be organised, technically competent, decisive and comfortable working under demanding project schedules.

Applications

Experienced Construction Supervisors based in Gauteng, including professionals currently working on project-based contracts or considering their next assignment, are encouraged to apply.

Please submit an updated CV highlighting your:

  • Industrial construction and power generation experience.

  • Major projects completed.

  • Contractor and workforce supervision experience.
