Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Technical Sales Representative to manage existing customer relationships and develop new business opportunities within the pump and fluid-handling industry.

This role combines technical pump and system knowledge with customer relationship management, technical sales, pump selection, troubleshooting, quotation preparation and order coordination.

The successful candidate will engage with industrial customers, consulting engineers, project houses and municipalities, supporting requirements from initial enquiry and technical assessment through to quotation, order processing and final delivery.

The position is suited to a technically competent professional who understands pump applications and can confidently recommend appropriate products and solutions while developing customer relationships and growing sales.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Sales and Business Development

Manage and develop relationships with existing customers while actively identifying and securing new business opportunities.

Conduct regular customer and site visits to identify requirements and promote suitable pumps, valves, spares and related solutions.

Develop relationships with consulting engineers, project houses, municipalities and other relevant stakeholders.

Identify potential projects, market opportunities and suitable tender opportunities.

Monitor relevant tender platforms and follow up on opportunities.

Maintain an understanding of market developments, competitor activity and customer requirements.

Follow up on quotations and projects to support conversion into orders.

Pump Selection and Technical Support

Provide technical advice on pumps, valves and associated pumping systems.

Conduct pump selections using appropriate selection software.

Assess customer applications and recommend suitable pumping solutions based on operating and system requirements.

Demonstrate an understanding of pump curves, duty requirements and pump performance.

Identify pump components and recommend appropriate replacement parts and spares.

Conduct field fault finding and investigate pump and system-related problems when required.

Assist customers with technical queries and application-related challenges.

Quotations and Order Management

Prepare accurate technical and commercial quotations for pumps, valves, spares and related products.

Process customer orders accurately and timeously using the relevant business systems.

Coordinate orders involving manufactured and externally sourced products.

Track orders from initial processing through procurement, manufacturing and final delivery.

Liaise with production, factory and internal support teams to manage orders and resolve delays.

Communicate order progress, expected delivery dates and changes to customers.

Ensure customer requirements and commitments are communicated effectively to relevant internal stakeholders.

Project and Customer Records

Register new projects and maintain existing project information in the relevant CRM system.

Keep project details, customer contacts and company information accurate and up to date.

Maintain regular follow-up on customer opportunities and projects.

Ensure professional, responsive communication throughout the sales and order fulfilment process.

Claims, Compliance and Team Support

Follow established procedures when handling customer claims and assist in resolving issues.

Comply with company policies, procedures and applicable health and safety requirements.

Support colleagues with branch operations and other reasonable duties when required.

Minimum Requirements

A Mechanical Engineering Degree or Diploma, or another relevant technical qualification.

A minimum of 3-5 years' experience in a similar technical sales or sales engineering position within the pump industry.

Practical knowledge of pumps, valves and complete pumping systems.

Experience with pump selection and pump-selection software.

An understanding of pump curves, duty requirements and application-based equipment selection.

Experience identifying pump components and suitable replacement spares.

Experience investigating pump or pumping-system problems and providing technical support.

Experience selling complete pumps, spares and related products.

Proven ability to manage existing customer relationships and develop new business.

Experience preparing technical and commercial quotations.

Good computer literacy and strong organisational skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

Ability to work from Durban and undertake customer and site visits.

Advantageous Experience

Previous experience with KSB products.

Experience working for a pump OEM, manufacturer, distributor or pump-system business.

SAP experience.

C4C or other CRM system experience.

Established customer relationships within KwaZulu-Natal.

Exposure to consulting engineers, project houses and municipalities.

Experience monitoring tenders and identifying project opportunities.

Experience coordinating customer orders with manufacturing, production and procurement teams.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate combines direct pump-industry experience with practical technical knowledge and a proven ability to sell pumps and spares.

They will be comfortable assessing customer requirements, selecting suitable pumping solutions, identifying components, providing field support and preparing quotations. They will also demonstrate a proactive approach to account management, new business development, project follow-up and order coordination.

Candidates must have a credible technical understanding of the products they sell. General industrial sales experience without direct pump-industry exposure will not meet the requirements of this position.
