An established renewable energy owner and operator is seeking a Power Engineer to join its technical team supporting a portfolio of operating renewable energy assets across South Africa.
This opportunity is ideally suited to an experienced electrical engineer with a Government Certificate of Competency (GCC Factories) and strong exposure to power systems, plant operations, maintenance, machinery safety, and regulatory compliance within industrial or utility-scale environments.
As the appointed Power Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and engineering support across a renewable energy portfolio while serving as the statutory GMR 2(1) Supervisor of Machinery for designated sites.
You'll play a critical role in ensuring plant reliability, improving asset performance, maintaining machinery safety standards, supporting maintenance teams, and driving compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations.
The role offers a unique combination of technical engineering, operational support, maintenance optimisation, safety leadership, and renewable energy asset management, with regular travel to power plant sites.
Key ResponsibilitiesGMR 2(1) Statutory ResponsibilitiesAct as the appointed GMR 2(1) Supervisor of Machinery.Drive machinery safety compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.Manage permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, isolation procedures and switching authorisations.Conduct site inspections, audits, and machinery safety reviews.Maintain statutory records and support incident investigations.Develop and implement emergency response and contingency plans.Deliver training and guidance on GMR-related requirements and machinery safety practices.Engage with regulatory authorities and external specialists where required.Power Engineering & Technical SupportProvide technical support to operations and maintenance teams across multiple renewable energy sites.Troubleshoot complex plant performance issues and conduct root cause investigations.Support electrical protection systems, relays, control systems, SCADA and communications infrastructure.Analyse operational data to identify trends, risks and optimisation opportunities.Review electrical designs, specifications, and technical documentation.Drive engineering improvements and plant performance enhancement initiatives.Support the execution of technical and capital improvement projects.Maintenance & Asset ManagementDevelop and optimise maintenance strategies and procedures.Conduct site inspections and operational reviews.Support maintenance planning processes and CMMS utilisation.Improve equipment reliability and operational performance across the portfolio.Engineering GovernanceSupport engineering change management processes.Review and approve technical modifications from a risk and compliance perspective.Maintain engineering risk registers and support proactive risk management initiatives.Required Qualifications & ExperienceGovernment Certificate of Competency (GCC Factories) - Essential
BEng / BSc Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification
Minimum 5 years' experience in:
